Schmoozy is only a few weeks away now, so today we wanted to set the tone for you. Here’s a track that singer Diana Stabel sent us—along with DJ Generic she’ll be providing the deliciously smooth soundtrack to our evening December 3rd.
“Ever since she can remember, Diana Stabel has been an old soul, which is perhaps why she’s always had a penchant for music that was written before her time. It’s no wonder she became a jazz singer. In 2006, Stabel released her debut album, Wave, and this allowed her some career-advancing opportunities, such as performing a jazzy duet with Colin James at the Winspear as part of the Colin James & Little Big Band’s Christmas Symphony tour as well as sharing the Jubilee stage with Adam Cohen in a tribute to his dad, Canadian folk legend Leonard Cohen. Though Stabel’s been a bit less active performing lately, spending more time traveling, sipping wine in the Mediterranean and eating currywurst in Berlin, she’s ready for a comeback and to reveal some new music. Look for her next album in 2012, featuring her own pop & rock, folk and classical compositions.”
Fish Griwkowsky took this video on the patio last night, and writes:
This is Shawn Pinchbeck, Gary James Joynes and Scott Smallwood performing an electronic sound experiment on Latitude 53′s rooftop patio Thursday in the late afternoon. Inside, dozens of lanyard-wearing Marshall McLuhan enthusiasts from all over the world enjoyed the gallery’s reaction to the philosopher’s upcoming 100th birthday in Edmonton.
There was dancing and conversation as an expected thunderstorm failed to materialize overhead. I say this all the time, but anyone who thinks downtown is dead should actually hang out with all of us here. It’s an open invite.
Weird Canada, recent winner of CBC Radio 3’s Searchlight Competition and Edmonton’s very own proponent of emerging and boundary pushing musical adventures, presents its third edition of Wyrd Fest. This year’s festival hits the road to bring some of the best contemporary and experimental Canadian music to Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. Check out Dirty Beaches, Long Long Long, Hobo Cubes, The Famines and many more!
This Thursday night is our first Rooftop Patio of the season! We’re celebrating with a bit of a giveaway: each week we’ll have a raffle in support of Latitude 53’s programming, and this week we’re giving away two festival passes for Sled Island—coming up in just a few weeks in Calgary.
We’ll also have Aaron Levin of Weird Canada playing rare records on the patio, pizza, beer, wine, Sangria and cocktails. If you made it out to the opening reception this past Friday you know what to expect: great company, a beautiful night on the patio (the forecast looks good) and of course a perfect opportunity to see the art with your friends. We hope to see you!
Thomas Kneubühler showed at Latitude 53 in 2009. Now, one of his mysterious “Office 2000” images graces the cover of Montreal musician Tiga’s new single, Overtime Remixes. During his show, Kneubühler took his work outside the gallery by hanging large portraits of security guards on downtown buildings near Latitude 53, as well as showing “Office 2000” images in the gallery itself. Now you might see his work in a local record shop.
Thomas Gaudin and Lucas F. Smith (AKA Hurt Feelings), of the Wicked Awesomes recorded this track, “Platonic Love” especially for 53 Ways to Leave Your Lover. Their mix tape, also called Platonic Love will be part of our silent auction on Saturday night.
We’ve got a few special treats lined up for the 53 Ways to Leave Your Lover silent auction this year. As well as all kinds of art donated by local artists, we’ve got a few special themed gift baskets: 53 Ways to Pamper Yourself, and a collection of mix tapes put together by local musicians. This one is put together by Mr. Weird Canada, Aaron Levin. We’ve also got tapes and CDs by Smokey (of Field & Stream), two members of the Wicked Awesomes, and Scott Davidchuk, (the Whitsundays, That’s Edmonton For You!).
