Incubator: Paintings in progress by Martina MacFarlane

Now Showing: Paintings in progress by Martina MacFarlane in the Community Gallery until Saturday, July 16. Come for the opening reception this Thursday, July 14 between 5-9, with an artist talk at 7. That’s the night of our Patio Series hosted by M.A.D.E.

A few words from Martina about the portraits:

“A portrait not only captures the sitter but also their connection to the people around them and to their personal history. I have asked my subjects to adorn themselves to best represent their personalities and connection with their communities. Some of the subjects chose the objects to surround themselves with as well as what they are wearing.

I am working with the idea of personal embellishment as a reflection of identity. Ornament and personal adornment - how we choose to decorate ourselves is often an effective advertisement of who we are, what we believe or alternately, a disguise.”
