Edmonton photographer Aaron Pedersen (you’ve seen his work in Where Are We Going?) points out the latest episode of artist-shaming on Canada’s newest news network:

For those of you who have a hard time finding my studio, The Sun News Network provided a map* on Ezra Levant’s show. According to him and Kathryn Marshall, I don’t pay rent at ArtsHab, where my lovely studio is located. I’m curious who cashes my rent cheques than?
…

*I added the red circle and logo in case you were thinking the Sun was particularly after me, that would be crazy…

We at Latitude 53 do not in fact recommend watching the video because it may cause nightmares. But in the meantime, remember that every time you think “it could be worse” about the latest disappointment in arts funding, somewhere out there someone is wishing that it was—or at least thinking really hard about how they can turn it into outrage factoids for their TV show.

In Edmonton this weekend

We had a blast—despite the rainy weather—at last night’s rooftop patio, but patio season’s arrival means that Edmonton summer is just getting underway. Here’s our three top tips for the weekend:

Last chance to see

Saturday is the last day of Daniel Evans’ Sanctuary and Gabe Wong’s Where Are We Going?, as well as the last day to catch James Birkbeck’s Incubator show. So if you haven’t had a chance to see them, or haven’t quite got your fill, now’s the time to act! Plus, you can pick up your very own miniature version of Where Are We Going? while you’re here.

Plus, pick up a paper copy of our new summer newsletter and get the scoop on what’s coming up. With the postal lockout, all of our copies are sitting at the gallery waiting to be read! Of course we’ll have more information here an on the website next.

Our other two tips aren’t part of our own programming:

International Espionage

Our Communications Coordinator Adam Waldron-Blain is back in town for a little while this summer and is re-staging his spy game from last year, which has since visited the Interesting Games Festival in Bristol, England. It goes down Saturday at 2pm, starting behind the Milner Library downtown.

Riding Pretty

Saturday is also the Bikeology Festival downtown, the chief event of Edmonton Bike Month our good friends at SNAP are marking the occasion with their annual spring fundraiser Love Those Clothes You Wear tomorrow night. Their theme is “Riding Pretty” to celebrate cycles and fashion, and their formula seems foolproof: cocktails and hors d’ouevres, dancing, a fashion show and a silent auction on clothing and prints created and donated by the community. Doors open at 7 pm tomorrow at FAB Gallery on the University Campus, and tickets are $25 at the door. More info.

This lovely little bundle is the catalogue for Where Are We Going? which is in its final week in the gallery. It includes all of the work in the show in miniature form, and you can pick one up from our front desk for $20 until Saturday.

Get Set

Our first Rooftop Patio party of the summer is kicking off this Thursday at 5pm! As our Executive Director, Todd Janes says, “If you have never been - you must come. If you are a regular - come back and enjoy the very best of Edmonton.”

With Team Edmonton and Womonspace as our first guest hosts, food from Haweli, summery cocktails, and raffle prizes including a SNAP gift package and Shanti Yoga passes, this Thursday at Latitude 53 promises to be a great one! Check out our Facebook invite for more details.

Inside the gallery, James Birkbeck shows recent photographs in our Community Gallery as part of our new Summer Incubator Series. Also be sure to catch the last days of Gabe Wong’s curated poster show Where Are We Going? and Daniel Evans’ Sanctuary, through June 20th.

Janice Ryan on Where Are We Going? and Sanctuary

Take a look at a copy of today’s Edmonton Journal—Janice Ryan reviewed our two current shows, Where Are We Going? and Sanctuary.

Art with the muscle to snap one’s busy mind out of autopilot and get the grey matter churning is worth a look. There is satisfaction in being offered a platform from which to reflect and ponder. It is all too easy to get muddled with day-to-day routines and forget the freedom and joy that lies in taking the time to simply think and imagine. Latitude 53’s two shows offer a chance to admire art for art’s sake and at the same time, get the cogs turning.

Catch both shows at Latitude 53 through June 20th.

Paul Blionv on Where Are We Going?

If you didn’t already pick up a copy of Vue this weekend, Paul Blinov penned a bit of a preview of Where Are We Going?.

Going? is the second show Wong’s curated that draws inspiration from a quote by post-modern visual artist Paul Gauguin: “Where do we come form? Who are we? Where are we going?” The first question was the crux a show back in 2009; Wong’s skipped the middle question, for now, and instead forged ahead.

“I was planning to do ‘who are we?’ though everyone thought ‘where are we going?’ is much more interesting. I think ‘who are we?’ is also a big question, but I think that’ll be my third one.”

Where Are We Going? is up in our main space until June 18, so come have a look this week.

That’s right: it’s almost time for another fresh show at Latitude 53!

We just updated our website with a little bit about Where Are We Going, our new Main Space poster show curated by Gabe Wong, and Sanctuary, Daniel Evan’s installation in the Projex Room. Both of the shows open next Friday at 7:00.

Calls for Submissions

If you’re an artist hoping to participate in either our Marshall McLuhan centenary project or Gabe Wong’s Where are we going? poster show, make sure you send us in your submissions right away—both are due this week.

As always, the details are on our website Spaces&Places:VisioningMcLuhan@100 and Where are we going?.

If you’re looking a little further ahead, we’re about ready to release our call for Visualeyez 2011, our annual festival of performance art. We’ll have the full details tomorrow but today we can let you know that the theme is worship.
