Incubator: paintings from a new series by Dawn Saunders-Dahl

Incubator, a series of work in progress, wraps up this week with the tenth and final show.

Dawn Saunders-Dahl is now showing works from her Surreal Series with an opening reception on Thursday, August 18 from 5-9pm, during the very last Rooftop Patio of the summer.

Come for the artist talk at 7pm.

“Within this series of work, I have added elements that may seem disconnected; the prairie landscape, comic book characters, gardens, game show props, neon lights, elephants and circus performers. All of these subjects/objects may be disconcerting to the viewer but are ciphers to the content of the paintings. These types of images emphasize the aura of mystery and fantasy that captivated me as a young child. By using this visual foundation to evoke moods and memories that are inspired by life in the real world, a playground of personal revelations can be created. It is my wish that the viewer can relate to the work through their own childhood memories and dreams.” -Dawn Saunders-Dahl

Incubator: new video by Clint Wilson

Now showing with the Incubator Series of works in progress by local artists, is Clint Wilson’s hour long video called you don’t know what you think you know. Opening reception is this Thursday from 5-9pm, and the closing date is Saturday, August 13.

Three screen shots from you don’t know what you think you know:

“In 1871, the English writer, Marxist and designer, William Morris undertook an extensive journey through the Southern Volcanic fields and West fiords of Iceland. Following his path through the beautifully detailed journal of his adventure that he left to us, I undertook a retracing of his journey on my way across Canada and then Iceland to a small fishing village on the Northern coast of that country. With camera rather than pen in hand, this project is a documentation and reflection upon that experience. ” -Clint Wilson

New at Latitude 53

Start the week off right by visiting Latitude 53’s new shows in the ProjEx Room, Main Space and community gallery.

In Saturday Mornings, The Diner, discover the lure of the diner on Alberta’s Cowboy Trail. Combining interactivity of the digital age with an appropriated diner booth and selection box borrowed from Marv’s Soda Shop, the collaborative new media work of Sarah Fuller, Lia Rogers and Lindsay MacDonald encourages viewers to consider the potpourri of cultural institutions and opportunity in our contemporary world. Also, it’s quite a bit of fun—viewers are invited to get comfy in the booth and choose from the tabletop selection box to discover authentic Albertan diners. Come and see for yourself.

Meanwhile, in the Main Space, Jason de Haan features sculptural and mixed media works both new and old that explore the boundaries between the natural and the supernatural. Future Future Age(s) is a mystical take on the many materials of nature that surround us, and its capturing of the northern lights, golden growth rings and crystal balls must be seen to be believed. Read an exchange between Kris Lindskoog and Jason de Haan on our website here.

Also keep an ear out for news about our new Incubator show featuring works by Clint Wilson, details are coming soon!

Incubator Series: Sergio Serrano & Alexander Stewart

Edmonton artists and designers Sergio Serrano and Alexander Stewart are showing collaborative work this week for our Summer Incubator Series. Their untitled interdisciplinary project is an experiment in communication—“a visual and spatial dialogue between the two unique perspectives” of the artists. Combining ideas of Socratic dialogue, facial recognition, musical composition, and translation, their work is a reflection upon fundamental problems of communication in the age of information.

Artist Statement

“The fundamental problem of communication is that of reproducing at one point, either exactly or approximately, a message selected of another point.”

—Claude E. Shannon, “father of communication theory”

Our yet untitled project for this series is an experiment in communication—part a game of broken telephone, part tongue-in-cheek displays of one-upmanship. Artist A will create an object meant to relay a secret message to Artist B, who will in turn create a new object in response, and so on until they run out of time. The exhibition is then a visual and spatial dialogue between the two unique perspectives; a physical manifestation reflecting on the way people communicate and share ideas in an information age and what’s lost and found in the process.

Come see the project for yourself through August 5 and visit the opening reception for Serrano and Stewart’s Incubator show this Thursday during our Rooftop Patio Series from 5-9pm, alongside the opening of Jason de Haan’s Main Space show Future Future Age(s).

Incubator: now showing drawings by Paul Smith

Hearts and Hatches: works in progress by Paul Smith

Find drawings and paintings in progress from Paul Smith this week until July 30th as part of our Incubator series. He’ll also be giving a talk at 7pm during his opening reception at our Rooftop Patio series. Behind the playful aesthetic of his artwork, Smith explores the complex and ever-changing relationship between humans, nature and urbanity. Here is an artist statement from Paul:

I was sitting down for a coffee break today smoking a cigarette, hot outside, so hot. I was wandering around inside my head and a butterfly startled me. I imagined it pinned like so many others to a little square tack board. Rows and rows of tack boards behind glass, some weird juxtaposition of beauty and the macabre. Wings slowly deteriorating, colours fading, catalogued. I suppose this is what I do. Though my stock is emotion and story, old images drawn and redrawn. I fell in love with line and colour, now I obsessively catalogue pieces of emotion and tiny little moments on birch and paper. This is where I lay my heart.

Paul Smith is a visual artist, writer and musician. He holds a BFA from the University of Alberta and was a curatorial intern with the Walter Phillips Gallery at the Banff Centre.
