Artist Sarah Fuller posted a few installation shots of Saturday Morning, The Diner on her blog this weekend. If you enjoyed the show, you owe it to yourself to take a look at what she works on in her solo practice—and if you haven’t been to the gallery to take a look yet, what are you waiting for?

New at Latitude 53

Start the week off right by visiting Latitude 53’s new shows in the ProjEx Room, Main Space and community gallery.

In Saturday Mornings, The Diner, discover the lure of the diner on Alberta’s Cowboy Trail. Combining interactivity of the digital age with an appropriated diner booth and selection box borrowed from Marv’s Soda Shop, the collaborative new media work of Sarah Fuller, Lia Rogers and Lindsay MacDonald encourages viewers to consider the potpourri of cultural institutions and opportunity in our contemporary world. Also, it’s quite a bit of fun—viewers are invited to get comfy in the booth and choose from the tabletop selection box to discover authentic Albertan diners. Come and see for yourself.

Meanwhile, in the Main Space, Jason de Haan features sculptural and mixed media works both new and old that explore the boundaries between the natural and the supernatural. Future Future Age(s) is a mystical take on the many materials of nature that surround us, and its capturing of the northern lights, golden growth rings and crystal balls must be seen to be believed. Read an exchange between Kris Lindskoog and Jason de Haan on our website here.

Also keep an ear out for news about our new Incubator show featuring works by Clint Wilson, details are coming soon!

Draw: it’s almost here!

We’re setting up today for tomorrow’s sixth annual Draw—and it’s going to be a great one.

With a vinyl collage wall, drawing games and a late-night party, it’s going to an awesome Saturday at Latitude 53, Harcourt House and SNAP.

On the roster of events:

So yes—it’s going to be a wonderful day celebrating art and community. As our program assistant Chelsea Boida stated in a recent interview about Draw in Vue Magazine :

“It really changes how you think about drawing: often it’s a private activity, you don’t feel that same sort of risk when you’re doing it in front of people. But here, I think it helps, because a lot of people are taking risks together, and hopefully it ends up working out collaboratively, and whether that’s a low level of collaboration—having a haphazard drawing next to somebody else’s—or if the drawings actually end up interacting.

Hope to see you there!

Summer staff no. 5.

We’ve been saying hello to our summer staff here on the blog during the last couple of weeks. Kelta Coomber is a Program Assistant at Latitude 53 coordinating some very exciting public arts projects. Here’s an interview from her about her summer pursuits.

What are you going to be doing this summer at Latitude 53?

I have the true pleasure of planning three public arts projects this summer. I’m planning a video installation, guerrilla gardening workshop and a day of public installations in late August. It is my responsibility to plan these events, ask for donations and then make sure it all runs smoothly with the guidance and help of the Latitude 53 staff. Pretty tubular stuff.

What is your favourite thing about Edmonton’s arts community? What about Latitude 53?

The Edmonton arts community is truly vibrant; I have the pleasure of knowing many artists, and I think there is great support (from the public at least) for them. I respect that Latitude 53 embraces innovation and experimentation in art and wants to provide support for a whole range of sensibilities and interests. I love the work environment at Latitude 53 - there is a lot of respect for each person’s creativity and many daily laughs.

Where do you go to school? What do you study?

I am a student at the U of A taking political science, but I’m hoping to go into art history.

What kind of hobbies do you entertain as of late?

I’m really into kitten videos right now.
