New at Latitude 53

Start the week off right by visiting Latitude 53’s new shows in the ProjEx Room, Main Space and community gallery.

In Saturday Mornings, The Diner, discover the lure of the diner on Alberta’s Cowboy Trail. Combining interactivity of the digital age with an appropriated diner booth and selection box borrowed from Marv’s Soda Shop, the collaborative new media work of Sarah Fuller, Lia Rogers and Lindsay MacDonald encourages viewers to consider the potpourri of cultural institutions and opportunity in our contemporary world. Also, it’s quite a bit of fun—viewers are invited to get comfy in the booth and choose from the tabletop selection box to discover authentic Albertan diners. Come and see for yourself.

Meanwhile, in the Main Space, Jason de Haan features sculptural and mixed media works both new and old that explore the boundaries between the natural and the supernatural. Future Future Age(s) is a mystical take on the many materials of nature that surround us, and its capturing of the northern lights, golden growth rings and crystal balls must be seen to be believed. Read an exchange between Kris Lindskoog and Jason de Haan on our website here.

Also keep an ear out for news about our new Incubator show featuring works by Clint Wilson, details are coming soon!

Kris Lindskoog on Jason de Haan

Jason de Haan’s show opens this Thursday, and if you haven’t had a look yet we’d like to point you over to our website where you can read the essay by Kristopher Lindskoog that accompanies the show:

The Alberta Artist, famously out-of-province, had given me assurance that I could meet with him in Beirut, Lebanon whilst he enjoyed a 9 month sojourn in the Historic city.

Sitting as we did, along the lapping shores of the azure Mediterranean, the Artist and I talked about many things. The cool sea breeze, frequent sips from our early afternoon Nescafe, and the smell of charring meats and sheesha were the backdrop to our meandering discussions about the exhibition. We talked of end times, art making, artʼs impossibilities and other futile things.

Kristopher Lindskoog: Lets start from the beginning. I know things like crystals, country music, Women, mysticism, and fishing are things you like. Among those, country and western music is tops. Was there ever a time that you believed in anything, other than country and western music?

Jason De Haan: No, Not really. Born with my boots on, huh huh! I mean, If you listen close enough, Willie talks about art too. Mystics come in all shapes and sizes, tones and colours…(Artist trails off, cough.) John Willie too…

KL: So what can you tell me about mystics? mysticism?

You’ll also be able to pick up a copy at the gallery Thursday (come for the patio, stay for the opening). It’s a mixture of earnest discussion with the artist, roundabout reflection and historical homage to their roots in the Calgary art scene.
