Tonight, we dine

We hope to see you tonight for our potluck and closing reception! If you can’t bring along a dish, no worries, bring yourself and have a munch on us!

Margaret Dragu and Freya Olafson will be doing two performance-presentations on what they’ve up to here at Latitude 53, so come check it out!

Potluck and Closing Reception with Freya and Margaret

Why do potlucks instantly fill you with those warm happy feelings? Humans must be biologically wired to love them, seek them out, and scour the classifieds for the next great potluck (or is that just me?).

Tomorrow’s potluck is sure to be a success and we’d love to have you. Remember to bring a gadget (Ipad, laptop, Android phone etc.) if you’d like! We’ll see you at 6:30 PM here at the gallery for a bite to eat, and two performance-presentations from Margaret and Freya. Happy cooking!

Our friend Freya Olafson has shared with us a virtual recipe in preparation for Wednesday’s potluck. Yup, you heard us: virtual recipe.

Of the recipe she says: “I have been searching through a lot of online games this week I would like to share a virtual recipe that can be practiced online and then created in real life - once perfected online.”

Remember to still eat in real life though. Virtual cooking is addictive and there’s an added bonus of no clean up!

If you don’t mind our input, we really think you should clear your schedule Wednesday night. We’re not trying to be pushy, but we would love for you to come celebrate two wonderful artists with us. And let’s be honest, your floor tile shopping can wait until Thursday and the dog isn’t smelling too awful just yet.

Artists Freya Olafson and Margaret Dragu have been with us throughout October and we are having a potluck and two projection-performances of what they have been up to this Wednesday at 630 PM. It’ll be fun, filling and informative. Freya will discuss her newly created Keystroke Choreographies videos, and Margaret will discuss her exploration of the recent Occupy Wall Street protests with street footage from Edmonton and around the world.

So come hang out in the FOMD Cyber Cafe. Bring your Android phone, laptop, Iphone, Ipad or Tamogotchi (remember those?), a friend or two, and a plate of something tasty.

And if the stars align, there might even be cookies.

Potluck with Olafson and Dragu

Don’t forget that this Wednesday our closing reception for FOMD Laboratory: Embodied Projections is a very special pot-luck dinner where you can have an intimate conversation with the artists Freya Björg Olafson and Margaret Dragu. It all starts at 6:30 pm, on the 26th—don’t miss it!

Hello to all of you tech heads (and burgeoning techies and non-techies too)!

We would like invite you to a special and ongoing event here at the gallery, entitled the FOMD Cafe. It is an in-gallery cafe, complete with fancy schmancy coffee maker and sweets. Artists Margaret and Freya have a catalogue of their online works and visuals that you are encouraged to experience, as you sit down/lay down/ jump (they’re very supportive of anything).

This is a BYOC event - that is, bring your own computer, Ipad, Android phone or any other gizmo you see fit to experience these works. If you don’t have access to any of these gadgets, Margaret and Freya have your back because they have some computers here.

All are welcome to come anytime during gallery hours- that is Tuesday to Friday 11AM to 7PM and Saturdays, 12PM-5PM. So come in, meet these two fantastic artists, get a warm drink and experience the FOMD Laboratory in all its glory.

If you can’t make it in person (they’re very kind, so it’s encouraged that you visit), experience their works pajama style in the comforts of your own home with these handy links. Drop us a line at info@latitude53.org with any feedback, questions or comments.

Whew!

Here at Latitude 53, we know that the autumn chillies are forcing you back into the warm confines of the indoors, and that this is not always the easiest of adjustments. We would love to brighten your cold weather blues with an invitation to our upcoming artist talk tomorrow, Saturday October 15 at 2:00 PM here at the gallery.

Freya Bjorg Olafson and Margaret Dragu are two interdisciplinary artists that explore the representation of identity and manipulations of the body through drawing, video, dance and performance. They are working in collaboration here at Latitude with an installation entitled FOMD Laboratory: Embodied Projections, and their artist talk will explore the public representation of self, performance and projection.

Both Freya and Margaret explore the interplay of visual arts and dance through their works. Margaret Dragu’s installation and performance work, Verb Woman: A Dance of Forgetting, explores creation and disintegration through an infinite loop of experience and re-experience. Margaret is interested in the process of mending, and the disintegration of memory, and her presentation “THE MULTI-PERSONNAE DIS-ORDER OF MME. DRAGU” will explore these topics in her work.

Freya is an intermedia artist with roots in contemporary dance. Freya’s work AVATAR explores the effect of technology on the expression and construction of one’s identity in the world of Web 2.0. Freya explores internet users’ constant need to share, edit and document their private existences within the public sphere, and her highly visual presentation tomorrow afternoon will explore the tensions between public and private performance and identity creation.

So come on down, bring some cider, and get ready to hear about some seriously exciting works.

The "art version of e-dating"

Avenue Magazine highlights our new show by Margaret Dragu and Freya Björg Olafson, FOMD Laboratory:

The meta-art project is about the process of putting together a collaborative show, which the artists have watched and documented as a process itself, a kind of “slow-moving reality television series,” jokes Dragu.

The artists and their work are in the gallery this week—so come by and have a look, or come to their artist talk Saturday afternoon at 2:00.

Upcoming artist talks: Margaret Dragu & Freya Björg Olafson and Andrea Williamson.
