Look for a couple of last-minute previews here tomorrow.
Tonight Maria Whiteman will be at the gallery at 7:00 for an artist’s talk. Come see Taxonomia from her point of view!
We’d like to formally (as formal as Tumblr can be) invite you to Andrea Williamson’s artist talk this Saturday, October 29 at 2 PM! Come draw with the artist and hear about the process and inspiration behind this wonderful show!
Hearts and Hatches: works in progress by Paul Smith
Find drawings and paintings in progress from Paul Smith this week until July 30th as part of our Incubator series. He’ll also be giving a talk at 7pm during his opening reception at our Rooftop Patio series. Behind the playful aesthetic of his artwork, Smith explores the complex and ever-changing relationship between humans, nature and urbanity. Here is an artist statement from Paul:
I was sitting down for a coffee break today smoking a cigarette, hot outside, so hot. I was wandering around inside my head and a butterfly startled me. I imagined it pinned like so many others to a little square tack board. Rows and rows of tack boards behind glass, some weird juxtaposition of beauty and the macabre. Wings slowly deteriorating, colours fading, catalogued. I suppose this is what I do. Though my stock is emotion and story, old images drawn and redrawn. I fell in love with line and colour, now I obsessively catalogue pieces of emotion and tiny little moments on birch and paper. This is where I lay my heart.
Paul Smith is a visual artist, writer and musician. He holds a BFA from the University of Alberta and was a curatorial intern with the Walter Phillips Gallery at the Banff Centre.
