Royal Bison as Artist Run Centre
This past weekend the Royal Bison Craft and Art Fair celebrated its eleventh incarnation. Just shy of 2700 people attended the two day event that showcased the works of 72 local artists, designers and crafters of all stripe. I took in both days, each time bringing a different person with me and finding great things to spend my money on (which shall not be revealed, since I know the recipients read...

From the Death Valley Marathon to Sin City......
In a mere three days, I’ll be headed down south to run my first marathon on quite the scenic trails through Titus Canyon in Death Valley, California. Since the race is on a Saturday morning, I’ll be staying overnight to give my legs the proper recovery they’ll need (the course gains 1,700 feet in the first 20K and then looses 5000 on the back half…!), before heading to Las Vegas on...

mmm.... tasty!
This week I had the pleasure of seeing Alexa Mietz’s exhibition “TASTY” at the University of Alberta’s FAB Gallery. Drawing inspiration from an eclectic array of sources including the rich foliage patterns of William Morris, the enigmatic shadow boxes of Joseph Cornell, and the decorative wall niches she encountered while visiting the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Alexa creates visual experiences...

You can read a press release, as well as find the pdf report, at the link but we’ll give you a quick summary, because honestly who wants to read that stuff? The Eternal Image of the Animal →
If you haven’t yet come by the gallery to see the shows and picked up your own copy of Amanda Boetzkes’ essay on Maria Whiteman’s Taxonomia, you can take a peek at it on our website: Fundamentally, the exhibition calls attention to the methods and settings that contain animal life, be they the discursive framing of anatomy, the preservation and storage of animal bodies, or...

Omar Mouallem in conversation with Mack Male →
Edmonton blogstar Mack Male just posted this interview with one of the editorial team at Avenue Magazine. They chatted about why Edmonton’s downtown is important, and what it takes to make young people—artists and professionals both, like Omar Mouallem himself—want to stay. "Man Watering High Flower Pots"
Mid-terms are over for another semester and I just finished a round of grading essays (something that I actually enjoy doing). As usual, they run the gamut from outstanding and humorous to the lackluster…. I teach the history of art and visual culture, which I often describe as learning about history and ideas in pictures. At the beginning of the semester, I passed out a series of 10 short...
